Always highly anticipated and beautifully packaged, this book is an essential record of the current trends in contemporary art in America Since its introduction by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1932, the Whitney Biennial has charted new developments in art and brought emerging artists to light. The first to be held in the Whitney's critically acclaimed new building in Manhattan's meatpacking district, the 2017 Biennial is curated by Christopher Y. Lew and Mia Locks. Lew and Locks are working in collaboration with a small group of advisors, including Scott Rothkopf, Negar Azimi, Gean Moreno, Aily Nash, and Wendy Yao. With a history of exhibiting work by the most promising and influential artists and provoking debate, the Biennial--the Museum's signature exhibition--is the most important survey of the state of contemporary art in the United States. This handsome book features texts and images representing the Biennial participants, artists who work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, film, and performance, as well as essays by the two curators and contributions by each of the advisors. As a record of the artists and ideas presented in this important survey exhibition, this catalogue serves as an essential resource on current trends in contemporary art in the United States.

The newest collection by one of America’s most exciting poets A collection in five parts, Susan Howe’s electrifying new book opens with a preface by the poet that lays out some of Debths’ inspirations: the art of Paul Thek, the Isabella Stewart Gardner collection, and early American writings; and in it she also addresses memory’s threads and galaxies, “the rule of remoteness,” and “the luminous story surrounding all things noumenal.” Following the preface are four sections of poetry: “Titian Air Vent,” “Tom Tit Tot” (her newest collage poems), “Periscope,” and “Debths.” As always with Howe, Debths brings “a not-being-in-the-no.”

A richly illustrated, expansive mid-career survey of the stand-out American artist's pioneering and influential work Since the early 1990s, Laura Owens (b. 1970) has challenged traditional assumptions about figuration and abstraction in her pioneering--and at times controversial--approach to painting. This inventive mid-career survey of Owens's work takes the form of an expansive seven-hundred-page book, interweaving writing on the artist's work with excerpts from a wide variety of texts. Including an essay by Scott Rothkopf, this richly illustrated volume presents Owens's paintings within a rich trove of archival imagery that includes exhibition announcements, installation photographs, personal correspondence, and source material, most of which has never before been published. Reflections by fellow artists, collaborators, assistants, dealers, family, and friends contribute an array of perspectives on Owens's working practice and her numerous achievements. Touching on topics that range from the history of embroidery to pop music and computer software to maverick artists such as Elizabeth Murray, Joe Zucker, and Charles M. Schulz, this book situates Owens's output, diverse interests, and personal history within a larger cultural matrix and provides a comprehensive overview of the life and work of this influential and continually evolving artist.

"Do You Expect Your Art to Answer?" is a collection of ekphrastic poems that explores the world of art and our relationship to it. Born from an experience at the Whitney Biennial (New York), at which an artist, in a room she had created in the museum, challenged an abusive patron using the question raised in the title, the collection explores the idea that art and human beings are in constant conversation with each other, whether or not we are using language. Inspired by art she has seen both abroad and in the U.S., as well as works of literature and other artefacts, Peterson investigates the ways in which we are absent from or present in each other's lives.

Virtuoso Chris Ware (b. 1967) has achieved some noteworthy firsts for comics. The Guardian First Book Award for Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth was the first major UK literary prize awarded for a graphic novel. In 2002 Ware was the first cartoonist included in the Whitney Biennial. Like Art Spiegelman or Alison Bechdel, Ware thus stands out as an important crossover artist who has made the wider public aware of comics as literature. His regular New Yorker covers give him a central place in our national cultural conversation. Since the earliest issues of ACME Novelty Library in the 1990s, cartoonist peers have acclaimed Ware’s distinctive, meticulous visual style and technical innovations to the medium. Ware also remains a literary author of the highest caliber, spending many years to create thematically complex graphic masterworks such as Building Stories and the ongoing Rusty Brown. Editor Jean Braithwaite compiles interviews displaying both Ware’s erudition and his quirky self-deprecation. They span Ware’s career from 1993 to 2015, creating a time-lapse portrait of the artist as he matures. Several of the earliest talks are reprinted from zines now extremely difficult to locate. Braithwaite has selected the best broadcasts and podcasts featuring the interview-shy Ware for this volume, including new transcriptions. An interview with Marnie Ware from 2000 makes for a delightful change of pace, as she offers a generous, supremely lucid attitude toward her husband and his work. Candidly and humorously, she considers married life with a cartoonist in the house. Brand-new interviews with both Chris and Marnie Ware conclude the volume.
