First published in 1548, The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius was intended as a guide for others on their own spiritual journeys. Today, almost five hundered years later, people continue to seek the heart-to-heart encounter with God through the experience of the Exercises. While many scholarly books and commentaries have explored the Spiritual Exercises, respected spiritual director George Aschenbrenner introduces the reader to the dynamics that are at the heart of the Exercises in Stretched for Greater Glory. With great passion and enthusiasm, Aschenbrenner describes what happens when one engages in the Exercises. His straightforward commentary and vast knowledge make this book appropriate for both the novice spiritual seeker and the experienced spiritual director. Throughout the book Aschenbrenner shows how the Exercises stretch the desires of the heart and focus one's love on God and in grateful service of others.

Tomas Mulholland swears to avenge his dead father, murdered by Captain James Spencer-Lambert, during the 1916 Easter Uprising in Dublin. Involved in the death of a priest himself, he flees to England. There he re-encounters Spencer-Lambert, now a wealthy coal owner in County Durham. Working in Eastinglea Colliery, owned by the Lamberts, he progresses to “District Overman” and is held in high regard. He establishes an IRA cell, fronted as the Christian Men’s Charitable Society (C.M.C.S.), working to relieve the ravages of WWII. His cousin, fellow émigré Michael Railley, is second-in-command; his two sons are his lieutenants. An assortment of enthusiastic “soldiers” makes up the Company. As Republicanism wanes in Ireland, Tomas’s plans become thwarted. Michael gets alarmed as Tomas’s frustration changes to fanaticism, when the IRA’s Army Council calls a halt to his activities. Tomas ignores them and develops his own agenda. Dermot is the “runt of the Mulholland litter”, years younger than Bridgett, his sister. Dermot’s adult brothers pay him scant regard, and his son’s genteel nature perplexes Tomas, who distances himself from the boy. His father’s disregard hurts Dermot deeply. His mother discovers Dermot’s religious leanings, and guides him to the priesthood. Margaret’s pride in Dermot contrasts sharply with Tomas’s bitter contempt for things religious. Their difference becomes totally irreconcilable once Dermot is ordained. Appointed curate in a parish near Eastinglea, Dermot determines to intervene when Michael Railley makes him aware of Tomas’s treasonous activities, but he, alerted to his son’s intentions, neutralizes all interference - in the confessional.... Bridgett’s life too is disrupted by her father’s destructive agenda, when her beloved James joins the C.M.C.S. Losing the battle for James’ loyalties, she finds herself alone - and pregnant! Engulfing the lives of those who love him most, Tomas’s futile crusade rages on to its tragic conclusion.

Sparks for Inspiration from the Ignatian Flame Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ, famously wrote that “the world is charged with the grandeur of God.” This quote points toward a key principle of the Ignatian tradition: that God is found in all things, in all places. Yet this is just one of an abundance of inspirational ideas that stem from Ignatian spirituality. To really understand what this unique yet highly practical spirituality is all about, it helps to look at it through many different lenses and to hear about it from many different voices. Charged with Grandeur contains more than 100 insightful and inspiring Ignatian thoughts from dozens of writers, including James Martin, SJ; Margaret Silf; and Monika Hellwig. The entries are conveniently grouped under 11 different Ignatian themes. Rather than throw readers into the deep end, Charged with Grandeur allows readers simply to dip their toes into the 500-year-old Ignatian tradition and to be inspired by the many riches it offers.

In the closing decades of the twelfth century the Cistercian Order found itself in a world rather different from the one in which it had been founded and began to thrive. The Order was justifiably proud of its achievements and unparalleled diffusion across Europe. It had become an important ecclesiastical and economic power in Europe and developed an institutional structure meant to sustain a large, widespread organization. Yet it had lost its influential spokesman, Bernard of Clairvaux, and as the century drew to a close, religious sensibilities were changing. The new mendicant orders, the Franciscans and the Dominicans, and the impulses they embodied, were to shift the center of gravity in Christian religious life for centuries to come.
