What does God want for our lives? How can we assess when feelings, even pleasant ones, are signs that God is calling us in a particular direction? In Spiritual Consolation, Timothy Gallagher, a retreat leader and popular author of The Examen Prayer and The Discernment of Spirits, introduces us to the teachings of Ignatius of Loyola on this crucial question. Through the use of real-life examples and the Ignatian principles from the Second Rule, Fr. Gallagher shows how all of us, especially those with busy religious lives, can learn to hear and follow God's leading. This book is both the completion of Dr. Gallagher's esteemed Ignatian trilogy and a provocative work in its own right.

This was written to his sister, Elizabeth, to console her in the trying times of the Protestant revolt in England. Saint John Fisher begins: “SISTER Elizabeth, nothing doth more help effectually to get a good and a virtuous life than if a soul, when it is dull and unlusty without devotion, neither disposed to prayer nor to any other good work, may be stirred or quickened again by fruitful meditation. I have therefore devised unto you this meditation that fol1oweth, praying you for my sake and for the weal of your own soul, to read it at such times as you shall feel yourself most heavy and slothful to do any good work. It is a manner of lamentation and sorrowful complaining made in the person of one that was hastily prevented by death (as I assure you every creature may be) : none other surety we have, living in this world here.”Also included is an instruction on the ways to perfect religion, and a sermon on the prophet Ezechial, Lamentations, song and woe.

An extraordinary spiritual practice with the power to transform the ordinary life Even in our modern society, one of the most effective ways to develop a dynamic relationship with God is through the 450-year-old practice of Ignatian spirituality. Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ, a leading expert on the subject, shows how Ignatian principles and practices can help each of us to discern God's will for our life and to become a changed person in Christ. Having overseen the efforts of more than 200 Jesuit retreat houses and centers for spirituality, Fr. Tetlow is uniquely equipped to describe how the ordinary person in the 21st century can live out the extraordinary theology of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The 40 concise meditations contained in Making Choices in Christ explore what Ignatian spirituality is and isn't; what it means to live by it; Ignatius's legacy to all who practice the spirituality; and its important concepts and experiences, most notably the Spiritual Exercises. An ideal resource to be used before or during a retreat with the Exercises, this book can guide any layperson at any time toward a life-changing encounter with the living God.

For the first time, in 35 years, here is a complete analytical and comparative study of the only two English translations of this marvelous work. This particular effort makes references back to our copy of the Spanish text for clarity. More importantly, this effort is coordinated with Teresa of Avila's works. Thus an additional 400 notes, in combination with comparatives between the variant references are supplied. This work has been translated by the sisters of Stanbrook. Francisco de Osuna draws on the ancient doctrine of the spiritual senses to describe the psychological experience that takes place as spiritual attentiveness is gradually deepening. He takes up the traditional analogies of the darkness of blindness, the silence in deafness, the passivity in dumbness to draw out the ways that the prayer of recollection belongs to the apophatic way of contemplating the divine. He connects and places his reflections in the context of the gospel beatitudes - the vision of humanity described by Jesus Christ.

Both Ignatius of Loyola and Jonathan Edwards wrote about the theme of Christian discernment. Evan B. Howard clarifies patterns of Christian discernment common to both Roman Catholics and Protestants. Yet his study extends analysis further; through a synthesis of cognitive psychology and religious philosophy, Howard provides greater specification of the roles of affectivity in discernment. This will allow spiritual advisors to better guide men and women into an effective discernment process. Psychologists, philosophers, and students of religion will find this book highly valuable.

They are Catholic prayers, reflections, meditations, mental exercises and directions designed to be read and carried out over a 28 to 30 day time period. These exercises are for Catholics and non-Catholics alike and grew out of Ignatius’ own desire to seek God’s will and to follow Christ no matter what the cost. Ignatius’ intent was that the exercises would help others to discern God’s will and to set the world on fire for Christ!

Are God, angels, and demons really invisible? Or can the spirits be seen with human eyes, through the lens of Church Ethics? The gift of discerning of spirits is indispensible to the study of church ethics. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), wrote two sets of Rules for Discerning of Spirits in his Spiritual Exercises in the early 1500s. He taught how the church can receive from God the gift to see otherwise invisible angels, demons, and the Holy Spirit. Ignatius' views were influenced by John Cassian, Jacobus de Voragine, Ludolph of Saxony, and Thomas a Kempis. Ignatius' Rules are exegeted in dialogue with contemporary scholars Karl Rahner, Hugo Rahner, Piet Penning de Vries, Jules Toner, and Timothy Gallagher, and applied to one study of ecclesial ethics in the narrative theology of Samuel Wells. A four-step Ignatian "pneumato-ethical method" is developed, which any analyst can follow to see the spirits, by consolation/desolation, consent, manifestation, and pneumato-ethics. This method revolutionizes how we study ecclesiology, soteriology, missiology/world religions, liturgy, worship, Eucharist, hermeneutics, homiletics, pastoral counseling, church history, and politics. The spirits are not invisible at all. They can be clearly discerned through the lens of ecclesial ethics.
