In this truly one-of-a-kind book, the author/narrator—a representative, in extremis, of contemporary American obsession with beauty, celebrity, transmitted image—finds himself suspended, fascinated, in the remoteness of our wall-to-wall mediascape. It is a remoteness that both perplexes and enthralls him. Through dazzling sleight of hand in which the public becomes private and the private becomes public, the entire book—clicking from confession to family-album photograph to family chronicle to sexual fantasy to pseudo-scholarly footnote to reportage to personal essay to stand-up comedy to cultural criticism to literary criticism to film criticism to prose-poem to litany to outtake —becomes both an anatomy of American culture and a searing self-portrait. David Shields reads his own life—reads our life—as if it were an allegory about remoteness and finds persuasive, hilarious, heartbreaking evidence wherever he goes. Winner of the PEN / Revson Award?

Many Protestant Evangelicals struggle to find meaning in the Lord's Supper. There may be theological positions to be held and certain religious protocols to be observed, but for many the Eucharist remains merely a symbol of remembrance and as such, an elusive connection to the table of Jesus. As new conversations take place about the emerging and missional church, the value of the ancient practices of the church are seeking new expression. However, since many in these conversations come from non-sacramental backgrounds, the Eucharist can easily become a utilitarian addendum to alternative church experiments. In reflecting on the invitation from Jesus, quoted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, to "do this," the question is asked, "What is this?" Shadow Meal challenges the idea that this is something containable or negotiable and suggests instead that this has much more to do with the invitation and presence of Jesus than it does with ecclesiastical practices or prescribed rituals. Shadow Meal seeks to offer Protestants some new images of the Eucharist and to foster a deeper appreciation of and connection to the presence of Jesus in the invitation to dine at his table. It offers new language to pastors and leaders who hope to find ways to frame the missional life of Christian faith for people whose lives cry out to be formed by the present reality of God's kingdom.

Shadow Patterns: Reflections on Fay Jones and His Architecture is a collection of critical essays and personal accounts of the man the American Institute of Architects honored with its highest award, the Gold Medal, in 1990. The essays range from the academic, with appreciations and observations by Juhanni Palaasma and Robert McCarter and Ethel Goodstein-Murphree, to personal reflections by clients and friends. Two of Arkansas’s most accomplished writers, Roy Reed and Ellen Gilchrist, who each live in Fay Jones houses, have provided intimate portrayals of what it’s like to live in, and manage the quirks of, a “house built by a genius,” where “light is everywhere. . . . Everything is quiet, and everything is a surprise,” as Gilchrist says. Through this compendium of perspectives, readers will learn about Jones’s personal qualities, including his strong will, his ability to convince other people of the rightness of his ideas, and yet his willingness, at times, to change his mind. We also enter into the work: powerful architecture like Stoneflower and Thorncrown Chapel and Pinecote Pavilion, along with private residences ranging from the modest to the monumental. And we learn about his relationship with his mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. Shadow Patterns broadens and enriches our understanding of this major figure in American architecture of the twentieth century.

Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION In my career as an art teacher, which extends over a period of many years, I have often been impressed with the deficiency in even a moderate knowledge of perspective on the part of young artists, who, in a general way, were possessed of considerable ability, but for some reason or other had failed to enter into the study of this branch of art, which teaches the underlying principles upon which all object drawing is founded. Strange as it may seem, I have often heard artists speak flippantly about perspective, even to the extent that some declared it is not necessary for an artist to trouble himself about studying perspective, because they believe that by the continued practice of drawing sufficient knowledge of its principles can be acquired to answer all practical purposes. That some facility is acquired without any special study in this way is undoubtedly true; yet is it not equally true that while some, whose perceptive faculties are more acute than those of others, may acquire a fair degree of accuracy in drawing, many gain but little and spoil much of their work--which in everything else may be very clever, but sadly defective in drawing---through blunders made by reason of the want of knowledge of perspective? I have often been asked by students to recommend a text-book on perspective, and was ever at a loss which to advise, some being so elementary that they do not carry the practical application far enough, while others are based upon the assumption that the student is sufficiently versed in geometry and projection to comprehend the more advanced and scientific treatise, which, however, in the absence of such preparation, is utterly unintelligible to the beginner. The object I have in mind, and the end I shall...
