Why People Get Lost reviews the psychology and neuroscience of how we find our way. Beginning with a history of studies looking at how organisms solve mazes, it then reviews contemporary studies of spatial cognition, and the waylinding abilities of adults and children. Paul Dudchenko then explores how specific parts of the brain provide a cognitive map and a neural compass. This book also considers the neurology of spatial disorientation, and the tendency of patients with Alzheimer's disease to lose their way. It concludes with the proposal that we get lost because our brain's compass becomes disoriented. --

Robert Jackall's Moral Mazes offers an eye-opening account of how corporate managers think the world works, and how big organizations shape moral consciousness. Based on extensive interviews with managers at every level of two industrial firms and of a large public relations agency, Moral Mazes takes the reader inside the intricate world of the corporation. Jackall reveals a world where hard work does not necessarily lead to success, but where sharp talk, self-promotion, powerful patrons, and sheer luck might. Cheerfully-bland public faces mask intense competition in this world where people hide their intentions, and accountability often depends on the ability to outrun mistakes. In this topsy-turvy world, managers must bring often unforgiving technology and always difficult people together to make money, an uncompromising task demanding continual compromises with conventional truths. Moral questions become merely practical concerns and issues of public relations. Sooner or later, managers find themselves wondering how to act in such a world and still maintain a sense of personal integrity. This brilliant, sometimes disturbing, often wildly funny study of corporate thinking, decision-making, and morality presents compelling real life stories of the men and women charged with running the businesses of America. It will interest anyone concerned with how big organizations actually function, or with the current moral malaise in our public life.

We are both oppressed and an oppressor in this world. And this definitely has to stop! The Way enlightens us that we have to find a way to help humanity become more humane to each other and create a heaven on earth through non-inclusive principles. It’s all about respect—giving and receiving it. The book speaks of liberating one’s self from becoming a victim as well as freeing one’s self from becoming an oppressor. Being victimized by society’s laws or being oppressed by others who may be more powerful should not be a hinder to become “the bigger man.” We should be an inspiration for change and be a person who finds ways for a resolution than being a part of the problem. The Way is a life-inspiring must-read book. Read on and spark humanity’s hope, ignite humanity’s faith, and be the change that the world needs to have.

A clash between the ideology of growth and the growth of ideas, between control and creativity, between measurement and the immeasurable, between predictability and the fickle muses of inspiration in engulfing our boardrooms. In this scathing swipe at the institutionalised idiocy that is stifling creativity just at the time the world needs it most Gordon Torr draws from the leading lights of creativity research to demolish the myths that surround the generation of ideas in the modern organisation. The curse of the brainstorm, the commoditisation of creative talent, the deskilling of the imagination, the startling inadequacies of management theory – these and the many other horrors of idea-assassination that run rampant in creative sector companies are dissected and disembowelled in this hilarious expose of the drama that unfolds every time a new idea slides across the boardroom table. This book sets out to address the black hole that surrounds the management of creative people, debunking many myths of creativity, and outlining a revolutionary approach to the pressing issue of creative productivity in the contemporary creative sector company. A handbook of tools, techniques, methods and practical ideas whose USP is a framework for thinking about efficient creative management – how to extract value from creative time. Gordon Torr presents a logical argument that puts in place the building blocks of the author’s knowledge and experience towards the final architecture. “We need them as never before. And we know that they’re somehow different. Yet the productive management of creative people is an almost totally neglected science. I doubt if there’s a single industry that wouldn’t gain immediate advantage from Gordon Torr’s scrupulous and enlightening detective work.” - Jeremy Bullmore

Douglas Bollinger decides to abandon his career, his girlfriend and his family to take up a new calling to join the United States Navy. Accepted at Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, Bollinger finds himself suddenly thrown into the rigorous training program required to gain his commission as a Navy Ensign. He begins the program as a lowly "Cumin" (Civilian Under Military Instruction) and undergoes a hellish first week culminating by his going through the dreaded "Maze". The program puts to the test Bollinger's physical, emotional and academic stamina while he suffers personal loss and tragedy and also finds himself as a witness to an unfolding political upheaval in the days before the military's infamous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Through it all, Bollinger navigates his way through the program which is designed to winnow the field so that only the most able, capable and talented candidates successfully complete the course. Not all of his newly-found friends make it through the program and we only learn at the very end of the story whether Bollinger does, either. This novel brings to life a short period of time in recent military history and how it impacted one young man.
