This textbook is for undergraduate students on a basic course in Statistical Mechanics. The prerequisite is thermodynamics. It begins with a study of three situations ? the closed system and the systems in thermal contact with a reservoir ? in order to formulate the important fundamentals: entropy from Boltzmann formula, partition function and grand partition function. Through the presentation of quantum statistics, Bose statistics and Fermi?Dirac statistics are established, including as a special case the classical situation of Maxell?Boltzmann statistics. A series of examples ensue it: the harmonic oscillator, the polymer chain, the two level system, bosons (photons, phonons, and the Bose?Einstein condensation) and fermions (electrons in metals and in semiconductors). A compact historical note on influential scientists forms the concluding chapter. The unique presentation starts off with the principles, elucidating the well-developed theory, and only thereafter the application of theory. Calculations on the main steps are detailed, leaving behind minimal gap. The author emphasizes with theory the link between the macroscopic world (thermodynamics) and the microscopic world.

Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...6. A particle slides without friction down an inclined plane, and in the 5th second after starting passes over a distance of 2207-25 centimetres; find the inclination of the plane to the horizon. 7. A particle, of mass 5 lbs., is placed on a smooth plane inclined at 30 to the horizon and connected by a string passing over the top of the plane with a particle of mass 3 lbs. which hangs vertically; find (1) the common acceleration, (2) the tension of the string, (3) the velocity at the end of 3 seconds, (4) the space described in 3 seconds. 8. A body, of mass 12 lbs., is placed on an inclined plane, whose height is half its length, and is connected by a light string passing over a pulley at the top of the plane with a mass of 8 lbs. which hangs freely; find the distance described by the masses in 5 seconds. 9. A mass of 6 ounces slides down a smooth inclined plane whose height is half its length and draws another mass from rest over a distance of 3 feet in 5 seconds along a horizontal table which is level with the top of the plane over which the string passes; find the mass on the table. 10. If a train of 200 tons, moving at the rate of 30 miles per hour, can be stopped in 60 yards, compare the friotion with the weight of a ton. 11-. A train is running on horizontal rails at the rate of 30 miles per hour, the resistance due to friction, etc. being 10 lbs. wt. per ton; if the steam be shut off, find (1) the time that elapses before the train comes to rest, (2) the distance described in this time. 12. In the previous question if the train be ascending an incline of 1 in 112, find the corresponding time and distance. 13. A train of mass 200 tons is running at the rate of 40 miles per hour down an incline of 1 in 120; find the resistance...

We may have lived knowing that the world around us operates in a way as if we observe them to be. This knowledge of how the universe operates, based primarily of our observations, has enabled us to predict actions and motions and allowed us to build machines and equipments that have made our lives easier and more enjoyable. The field that allowed us to do that is classical physics. The world, however, is advancing and our knowledge of how things are expands over time. We have discovered in the last few decades that these sets of rules that we have devised can perfectly describe the large-scale world but cannot accurately define the behaviors of particles in the microscopic world. This necessitated another field to explain the different behavior in the microscopic world: quantum physics.

Almost all real systems are nonlinear. For a nonlinear system the superposition principle breaks down: The system's response is not proportional to the stimulus it receives; the whole is more than the sum of its parts. The three parts of this book contains the basics of nonlinear science, with applications in physics. Part I contains an overview of fractals, chaos, solitons, pattern formation, cellular automata and complex systems. In Part II, 14 reviews and essays by pioneers, as well as 10 research articles are reprinted. Part III collects 17 students projects, with computer algorithms for simulation models included. The book can be used for self-study, as a textbook for a one-semester course, or as supplement to other courses in linear or nonlinear systems. The reader should have some knowledge in introductory college physics. No mathematics beyond calculus and no computer literacy are assumed.

For many people, the thought of getting into shape –– or just the act of exercising for that matter –– is like throwing a speeding locomotive into reverse. An enormous amount of energy has to come to a loud, grinding halt in a short period of time, and then slowly begin to move in the opposite direction. Getting into shape, biologically, is a relatively easy process; the hard part, more often than not, is simply getting started. Being physically fit takes commitment, discipline, concentration, and an overall desire to succeed. Making the commitment to physical fitness, in many ways, presents a greater challenge than the weights and workout routines that will follow; and in the beginning, many people make the mistake of training too hard and too fast, causing soreness, frustration, and discouragement. Walking blindly into a gym and grabbing a piece of equipment in the hopes that something will happen will never work. To achieve your fitness goals, you need to plan your work –– and work your plan. Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness helps you create that plan, by helping you understand your body, and the changes beginning an exercise program will play upon it. Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness covers the importance of making a commitment to exercise, and what results you can expect in the first month. How to keep up your motivation, and develop a fitness program that is right for you. Understanding the importance of weight training and cardiovascular training –– and how to get the maximum benefits of both. Knowing the muscles in the human body and detailed instructions on performing different exercises to work each one; employing proper form to achieve maximum results. Changing one’s lifestyle is never easy, especially when food, schedules, and physical exertion are involved. Body Mechanics - Beginner's Guide to Fitness helps ease you into the world of physical fitness. Taking your new exercise program one step at a time helps to condition your body to respond positively to the exciting changes that will come.

Introduction to Continuum Mechanics

Continuum mechanics studies the response of materials to different loading conditions. The concept of tensors is introduced through the idea of linear transformation in a self-contained chapter, and the interrelation of direct notation, indicial notation and matrix operations is clearly presented. A wide range of idealized materials are considered through simple static and dynamic problems, and the book contains an abundance of illustrative examples and problems, many with solutions. Through the addition of more advanced material (solution of classical elasticity problems, constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids, and finite deformation theory), this popular introduction to modern continuum mechanics has been fully revised to serve a dual purpose: for introductory courses in undergraduate engineering curricula, and for beginning graduate courses.
