A darkly comic and ambitious sequel to the American classic Catch-22. In Closing Time, Joseph Heller returns to the characters of Catch-22, now coming to the end of their lives and the century, as is the entire generation that fought in World War II: Yossarian and Milo Minderbinder, the chaplain, and such newcomers as little Sammy Singer and giant Lew, all linked, in an uneasy peace and old age, fighting not the Germans this time, but The End. Closing Time deftly satirizes the realities and the myths of America in the half century since WWII: the absurdity of our politics, the decline of our society and our great cities, the greed and hypocrisy of our business and culture -- with the same ferocious humor as Catch-22. Closing Time is outrageously funny and totally serious, and as brilliant and successful as Catch-22 itself, a fun-house mirror that captures, at once grotesquely and accurately, the truth about ourselves.

By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Closing Time recounts Joe Queenan’s Irish Catholic upbringing in a family dominated by his erratic father, a violent yet oddly charming emotional terrorist whose alcoholism fuels a limitless torrent of self-pity, railing, destruction, and late-night chats with the Lord Himself. With the help of a series of mentors and surrogate fathers, and armed with his own furious love of books and music, Joe begins the long flight away from the dismal confines of his neighbourhood – with a brief misbegotten stop at a seminary – and into the wider world. Closing Time is an unforgettable account of the damage done to children by parents without futures and of the grace children find to move beyond these experiences. ‘Closing Time is unmistakably a tale of triumph, vindication and revenge . . . [an] enlightening account of the ways in which we are all, to some extent, casualties of our own childhoods.’ Sarah Churchwell, Guardian ‘A brutally executed coming-of-age story’ Esquire ‘Will have readers crying tears of both sorrow and hilarity’ Booklist

The real story behind the murder of a Manhattan schoolteacher that became a symbol of the dangers of casual sex: “A first-rate achievement” (Truman Capote). In 1973, Roseann Quinn, an Irish-Catholic teacher at a school for deaf children, was killed in New York City after bringing a man home to her apartment from an Upper West Side pub. The crime would not only make headlines, but would soon be fictionalized in the #1 New York Times–bestselling novel Looking for Mr. Goodbar and adapted into a film of the same name, starring Diane Keaton and Richard Gere. The case evolved a cultural phenomenon, sparking debates about the sexual revolution and the perils of the “pickup scene” at what were popularly known as singles bars. In this groundbreaking, inventive true crime tale, the New York Times reporter first assigned to the story offers “a meticulous, investigative account of the so-called Goodbar killing” (Los Angeles Times). Using a dramatization technique in which she gives the victim a different name, Lacey Fosburgh veers between the chilling, suspenseful personal interactions leading up to the brutal stabbing and the gritty facts of the aftermath, including the NYPD investigation and the arrest of John Wayne Wilson. The result is a must-read that earned an Edgar Award nomination for Best Fact Crime, and a classic of the genre that Men’s Journal described as “more riveting, and more tragic, than the Judith Rossner novel—and the 1977 movie Looking for Mr. Goodbar.” In the words of the New York Times, “Fosburgh writes with compassion of these sick and shattered lives.”

Canadians have long associated Prohibition with the colourful history of the Jazz Age in the United States. But even before the American ban that was in place from 1920 to 1933, Canada initiated its own Prohibition during World War I. The so-called Cold Water Army was led by zealots and prudes preaching hellfire and damnation, but also by committed social reformers who recognized the ill effect excessive drinking was having on family and social life in Canada. In March 1918, the federal government banned the manufacture and importation of liquor, making it illegal to have a drink anywhere in the country. For the next twenty-one months, Canada was as dry as any law could make it, which admittedly was not very dry. Closing Time: Prohibition, Rum-Runners, and Border Wars tells the story of this fascinating attempt by both provincial and federal governments to control the social habits of Canadians. It began as a popular crusade that was supposed to cleanse society of a widespread evil, but instead became an opportunity for larceny, profit and violence on a grand scale. This was the age of liquor smugglers and rum-runners: gangsters like Hamilton’s Rocco Perri, boot- leggers like Alberta’s Emilio Picariello and border runners like the young Bronfman brothers. Employing a variety of anecdotes and illustrations, Closing Time conjures the legal and historical context of Prohibition, presenting well-rendered figures and impressive research. Comparing the past with our present-day prohibition of certain recreational drugs, Francis explores the limits of laws that forbid these indulgences -- a topic that is equally as relevant today as in the past.

Cassandra is swollen in her pregnancy, which makes her irritable and aggressive. While it annoys Mike, who stays home with her all day long, he keeps his mouth shut and remains sympathetic. But when he starts having dreams about hurting his baby, losing him at the supermarket, and accidentally dropping him, the fear kicks in. Unsure what to do, he turns to the best father he’s ever known—his own. Sean surprises Scarlet with a diamond bracelet and a surprise trip to a bed and breakfast. When Scarlet realizes it’s for their one-year wedding anniversary, she knows she completely forgot about it. After apologizing repeatedly, Sean brushes it off. But when she finds the receipt for the bracelet, costing Sean over a hundred thousand dollars, she’s pissed at him—livid. Flynn decides to get Hazel drunk because he says the sex is awesome. She’s more confident and carefree, telling him exactly what’s on her mind and how she feels toward him. But when they run into Zahara at the bar, Hazel doesn’t hold back. Dragging her by the hair outside, Hazel is ready to bash her face in right on the sidewalk. Flynn stands aside, wishing he had a bowl of popcorn to snack on. Ryan starts to feel unsure about his wedding day as it approaches. Not because he doesn’t love Janice or has faith in their marriage, but because he simply isn’t good enough for her. His mom is psychotic and abusive. Should Janice have to settle for someone who’s damaged goods? He finally decides to end their relationship, breaking up with her through a note before taking off. But will he go through with it? And if he does, how will Janice react? Perhaps their relationship isn’t as strong as they once believed. Cortland and Monnique end up taking their honeymoon to a new height. Instead of being gone for the two weeks as planned, they decide to make it two months, traveling through Europe and sightseeing. But when Cortland gets home, he’s unsure if he still has a job. Sean is accommodating—but is that accommodating?

Poetry. If you don't yet know Mario Susko's poetry, let this be the book you come to treasure. An international reader, Susko's popular YouTube video (by poetryvlog.com), indeed shows Mario's distinctive dragged down humanity--a tendency to survive by the absurd rather than to be torn apart by the tragic (Library Journal)--still lifting itself to the page, as if at least out of witness. What is surreal is existential. If Bukowski had endured Croatia in war, this might be a kindred result. Only, the cynic is beauty. Susko's poetry is the friend you're glad found a way to bring himself to water.

Past and present often co-exist in these fresh, unflinching poems; childhood merges with old age, as the gains and losses of life are explored with clear-sighted tenderness and Page's characteristic precise observation and luminous imagery. His wry humour is also a delight; surreal fantasies of unlikely encounters and their consequences; ghosts jostle '...for space at the bar with their/more illustrious predecessors'. This is a collection where the poet's ghosts are brought into the light, and celebrated. Catherine Smith, poet
