Es ist ein Krimi mit Poststrukturalisten. Paris, Frühjahr 1980: Roland Barthes wird von einem bulgarischen Wäschelieferanten überfahren. Barthes kommt von einem Essen mit dem Kandidaten für das Amt des Ministerpräsidenten, François Mitterrand, und trägt ein Manuskript unter dem Arm. Ein Passant, Michel Foucault, wird Zeuge des Unfalls und behauptet, es war Mord. Der Tod des Autors ist für Kommissar Bayard ein Rätsel. Er mischt sich unter die Poststrukturalisten, besucht Vorlesungen von Foucault und hört Vorträge von Julia Kristeva, Philippe Sollers, Jacques Derrida und anderen. Da er nichts versteht, macht er den jungen Sprachwissenschaftler Simon Herzog zu seinem Assistenten. Der Roman ist auch ein Gesellschaftsporträt des Frankreichs der achtziger Jahre. Bayard ermittelt unter den Nach-Achtundsechzigern, die er nicht ausstehen kann, diesen linken Nichtsnutzen, die mit Joints und langen Haaren vor der Uni herumlungern und mit lüsternen Professoren, die von sexueller Freiheit labern und sich unzüchtig benehmen, Frankreichs Kultur gefährden. Das Manuskript, das Barthes bei sich hatte, bleibt spurlos verschwunden. Auch der bulgarische Geheimdienst interessiert sich dafür. Ein bulgarischer Mörder greift Simon Herzog mit einer vergifteten Regenschirmspitze an. Aber im letzten Moment wird Herzog von zwei Japanern gerettet. Sie sind ebenfalls hinter dem Manuskript her. Eine heiße Spur führt zu dem italienischen Semiotiker Umberto Eco. Also bewegt sich der Tross – Kommissar und Assistent, Bulgaren und Japaner, nach Italien. Die Reise geht noch lange weiter, sie führt sogar auf einen amerikanischen Campus, wo Foucault über die Sexualität der Elefanten philosophiert. Das Manuskript, das alle haben wollen, beschreibt die siebte Sprachfunktion (in Anlehnung an Roman Jakobsons Standardwerk der Linguistik über die sechs Sprachfunktionen). Die siebte Funktion, die Binet Roland Barthes erfinden lässt, gibt Politikern die rhetorischen Mittel an die Hand, öffentliche Rededuelle und damit auch die Wahlen zu gewinnen. Könnte Mitterrand damit an die Macht gelangen?
