It may not be obvious why someone like myself would write my memoir. I am not a famous person. I am not a professional athlete. I am not a politician. I am not even known in my local area of North Carolina. I do not fit into any of these typical categories of autobiographical writers. However, as in most people, I have a story to tell that is unique from many and common to some. We all have stories that people can relate to and sympathize with, if only we just tell them. I find a great relief when I learn that others have survived similar struggles that I am going through. I am living proof that it is possible to live through many things and come out the other side a better person...

This is the inspiring story of an ordinary guy who achieved two great goals that others had told him were impossible. First, he set a record for the longest automobile journey ever made around the world, during the course of which he blasted his way out of minefields, survived a breakdown atop the Peak of Death, came within seconds of being lynched in Pakistan, and lost three of the five men who started with him, two to disease, one to the Vietcong. After that-although it took him forty-seven more years-Albert Podell set another record by going to every country on Earth. He achieved this by surviving riots, revolutions, civil wars, trigger-happy child soldiers, voodoo priests, robbers, pickpockets, corrupt cops, and Cape buffalo. He went around, under, or through every kind of earthquake, cyclone, tsunami, volcanic eruption, snowstorm, and sandstorm that nature threw at him. He ate everything from old camel meat and rats to dung beetles and the brain of a live monkey. And he overcame attacks by crocodiles, hippos, anacondas, giant leeches, flying crabs-and several beautiful girlfriends who insisted that he stop this nonsense and marry them. Albert Podell's Around the World in 50 Years is a remarkable and meaningful tale of quiet courage, dogged persistence, undying determination, and an uncanny ability to extricate himself from one perilous situation after another-and return with some of the most memorable, frightening, and hilarious adventure stories you have ever read.

In the twenty-first century, a developmental phase of life is emerging as significant and distinct, capturing our interest, engaging our curiosity, and expanding our understanding of human potential and development. Demographers talk about this new chapter in life as characterized by people—between fifty and seventy-five—who are considered "neither young nor old." In our "third chapters" we are beginning to redefine our views about the casualties and opportunities of aging; we are challenging cultural definitions of strength, maturity, power, and sexiness. This is a chapter in life when the traditional norms, rules, and rituals of our careers seem less encompassing and restrictive; when many women and men seem to be embracing new challenges and searching for greater meaning in life. In The Third Chapter, the renowned sociologist Dr. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot offers a strong counterpoint to the murky ambivalence that shrouds our clear view of people in their third chapters. She challenges the still prevailing and anachronistic images of aging by documenting and revealing the ways in which the years between fifty and seventy-five may, in fact, be the most transformative and generative time in our lives, tracing the ways in which wisdom, experience, and new learning inspire individual growth and cultural transformation. The women and men whose voices fill the pages of The Third Chapter tell passionate and poignant stories of risk and vulnerability, failure and resilience, challenge and mastery, experimentation and improvisation, and insight and new learning.

"In 2016, the University of Calgary celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking the year we achieved autonomy--made possible only through the audacious vision and dedication of students, faculty, staff, alumni and Calgary community members who lobbied over decades for an independent institution. Since its inception, the university has remained true to this bold and ambitious spirit, growing into Canada's and North America's top-ranked university under the age of 50. We have worked hard to grow a strong university family, where people are united in a set of core values and common goals, and where those we are privileged to welcome to campus every day feel well supported, encouraged, and continuously challenged to make a difference in the world. Through this publication, we recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of the many students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends who have helped create this remarkable institution."--

Brower had left San Francisco with the intention of making a short dash north on a whaling ship bound for the mythic Arctic Circle. Adventure had a way of following Charlie Brower. His initial landing turned into a fifty-year long ice-bound lifestyle. Once he stepped off the whaler and back onto dry, albeit frozen land, Brower took a job as master of the whaling station. But, though commerce brought him north, it was the people that helped keep him there for Charlie soon became fast friends with the native Inuit people. They taught him how to hunt seals on the ice, caribou on the tundra, and whales out on the sea. He learned their secrets, lived in their igloos, navigated in their kayaks and avoided being murdered in their feuds. Plus the young adventurer observed the great dramas of the Far North play out. He saw the last of the sailing ships disappear over the horizon, and watched the first airplane fly in. For fifty-seven years, through ice storms and northern lights, Charlie Brower maintained both this lonely outpost and his claim as “Uncle Sam’s most northerly citizen.” A book to remember, “Fifty Years Below Zero” is richly illustrated throughout with photos by the author.

A journey of the soul through the map of Christian time. The liturgical year, beginning on the first Sunday of Advent and carrying through the following November, is the year that sets out to attune the life of the Christian to the life of Jesus, the Christ. What may at first seem to be simply an arbitrary arrangement of ancient holy days, or liturgical seasons, this book explains their essential relationship to one another and their ongoing meaning to us today. It is an excursion into life from the Christian perspective, from the viewpoint of those who set out not only to follow Jesus but to live and think as Jesus did. And it proposes to help us to year after year immerse ourselves into the sense and substance of the Christian life until, eventually, we become what we say we are—followers of Jesus all the way to the heart of God. It is an adventure in human growth; it is an exercise in spiritual ripening. A volume in the eight book classic series, The Ancient Practices, with a foreword by Phyllis Tickle, General Editor.

The Land Beyond Time is a non-stop, fast paced, action packed adventure that takes place in the jungles of the Amazon River. It is a story about traitors, sabotage, espionage, greed, hate, love and romance, cold blooded murder, and justice. It is the story about the trials and tribulations of a dozen human beings who’s sabotaged aircraft crashes into the Amazon jungle. The crash survivors, 6 men and 6 women, including 2 drug cartel bosses, being extradited to the US, now must compete against their individual fears, each other and those unknown unexplained challenges facing them in the hot, wet, dangerous jungle. The terrifying but strange animals that abound there, like the giant spiders, boars, anacondas, and crocodiles; two hostile tribes and the headhunters; a Colombian drug cartel group of professional killers coming to rescue their bosses; and a small, but elite team of US Marines conducting search and rescue operations for the crash survivors; all are tossed together in the jungles of the Amazon. Our adventure begins during December 1999, in Lima, Peru, when a US military aircraft (C141) preparing to take a number of government passengers back to the US, is commandeered by an Embassy official. He orders the aircraft to take on10 additional passengers, including two recently captured Colombian drug lords being extradited to the US. Hours into the flight the plane is sabotaged by someone onboard and it crashes into the Amazon River dumping the survivors into the hostile terrain north of Manaus, Brazil. Two of the 12 crash survivors are immediately separated from the main group and have adventures of their own to contend just to remain alive. The remaining survivors are captured by one of two hostile tribes (the In’gou and San’gou). The survivors are taken to the In’gou village and interrogated, while second tribe prepares to attack the In’gou village to pre-empt an escaped prisoner’s arrival there, who possesses information which could change the delicate balance of power in the jungle. Back in Peru, an Embassy official is fingered as an espionage agent for the major drug cartel. The official gets nervous and runs to his new bosses in Colombia. Meanwhile, the cartel sends 24 professional killers to retrieve their two drug bosses from the sabotaged aircraft. Their additional instructions are to eliminate all the remaining passengers. When the aircraft fails to show up at Manaus as planned, the cartel’s killers immediately begin a search pattern, and within hours of finding the crashed aircraft, their journey begins. Back in Lima, the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of the Marine Security Guard (MSG) Detachment, a friend of Al Ranlom, a former Marine who is aboard the missing aircraft, hears of the espionage and the plane crash. Not one to stand by and watch, the NCOIC forms an unofficial search and rescue team, which picks up the trail of the missing craft and her survivors. The dangers to all involved: the survivors, the cartel’s professional killers and the Marine Security Detachment rescuers, are found in every turn they take. They are all around them, in the trees, at ground level, on, under and above the waterways, swamps and mangroves. These hazards eat away at their self confidence, and tears at their moral fabric. They are tested continuously, passing one test only to encounter another challenge. If it isn’t attacks by giant spiders, anacondas, and crocodiles, it’s tigers, flesh eating worms and blood sucking bats. Or it’s problems from hostile tribes or from the natural environment, like earthquakes and lava flows or from the failure of their sophisticated equipment, like the GPS systems, radios, and walkie-talkie
